Deutsche Welle recently featured the plight of Swiss dairy farmers in the face of declining milk prices. It seems they are feeling pressures similar to those facing small US producers:
"Swiss dairy farms have steep plots of land – which limits the size of the herds. This means overheads are high, and the farms aren't especially competitive. They are also traditionally family affairs, with fathers handing over the business to their sons. Farmer Brunoi Fahrni, with three young boys, is beginning to realize that's probably not realistic in the current climate."
Will the industry survive in Switzerland at all, or like the US industry, will producers concentrate in those areas with the terrain and technology to compete? An interesting case study of the effects of the EU trade policy on its neighbors. Stay tuned.
